Hostile architecture refers to the design of public spaces or buildings with the primary purpose of discouraging certain behaviors or activities, often targeting vulnerable or marginalized groups. Hostile architecture features design elements such as spikes, bars, and sloped surfaces that make it difficult or uncomfortable for people to sit, lie down, or sleep in public spaces. The aim of such architecture is to control and manipulate the behavior of those who use public spaces, often in a way that can harm the physical and mental well-being of marginalized individuals, such as the homeless.
