This sculpture was created to present a different perspective on the traditional nuclear family dynamic. Five forms shaped how a child might think of a house: a box with a roof, a door, and a square window. Each house was made to represent a different role in the house. The solid wooden house is the mold from which all the subsequent ones are made from, or looked to as a model. This represents the paternal figure in the family, father or otherwise. The house of concrete can be seen as the figurative and literal rock of the house; this role can be filled between parents or it could be held by any guardian. The dirt house represents the first child, freshly molded, ripe for growth and new life. The house of twigs is another child, smaller and created with instability and uncertainty, but still standing due to the support around it. The wood stick-framed house is meant to be the depiction of the ideal model of ‘home,’ which is ultimately unachievable and the ghostly frame is a reminder of the notion.
