PORTFOLIO/SCULPTURE/WUNDERKAMMERN (2021)
Wunderkammern
2021
22 x 48 x 5 inches
multimedia sculpture
The sculpture consists of four Wunderkammern, or “cabinets of wonder,” showcasing items pertaining to the different stages of practice that I employed when planning and making a sculpture. The idea is inspired by these ‘cabinets' from sixteenth-century Spanish royalties that would showcase flora and fauna from other countries such as museums. They would “showcase” these exotic items in their home and invite people to come and see.
This sculpture is an exploration of material as much as it is of its process.
The first box, depicting the research and development phase contains a plywood frame, cork board, dry-erase board, paper, metal clip, a notebook, a lighter, a pencil, seven paperback books, six printed images, and six tacks.
The second box is the representation of the exploration phase, and it consists of a plywood frame, some canvas, four pins, paper, oil paint on paper, glossed, a cotton rag, a cardstock viewfinder, a kneaded eraser, a bottle of Galkyd, a palette knife, a horsehair brush, a mirror in a gilded frame, a metal clip, a red ceramic square, a polystyrene sheet, and three paint tubes: oil (alizarin crimson), gouache (permanent white), and watercolor (yellow ochre).
The third box represents the material and the development of choice. This is the final planning stage, in which the material is chosen and prepped. In the box lies its plywood frame, some foam, a 1mm polystyrene sheet, a steel sheet, paper, a hammer, a screwdriver bit, a pair of wire cutters, ½ in. wrench, a brush, wood, loose gravel, red soil, aluminum foil, a 20000 mAh power bank, a micro-USB cord, a plastic container, a cotton sheet, a 32MB Gamecube memory card, and a 2GB SD card.
The fourth box represents utility and labor and the execution of previous ideas and planning. It is made up of the plywood frame, cotton sheet, wooden sticks, twine, hemp rope, bubble wrap, felt sheet, cardboard, a wristwatch, a pair of scissors, a pinecone, a tape measure, one Benadryl, a piece of charcoal, one David's sunflower seed, an X-Acto blade, and glue.
